All About Scaffolding In Education

One of the most popular teaching methods applied today is scaffolding in education.  This method of teaching was proposed by Lev Vygotsky.  Lev Vygotsky made a theory known as Zone of Proximal Development.  The theory states that a teacher will introduce a new concept to a student and gives the student all the assistance that he/she will require in the beginning of the teaching phase.  Then as the lessons continue, the teacher will assign new lessons that the student must learn.  This time the student will be required to handle things on their own.  This is the basic of fundamentals of scaffolding in education.

However, there are still a lot more concepts involved in scaffolding in education.  Another part of the Zone of Proximal Development is to find out the level of difficulty a student will be able to handle on his own and what rate of accomplishment will he achieve.  The Zone of Proximate Development also requires the determination of the level in where the student will then need the assistance of the teacher and how much accomplishment will he achieve under supervision and assistance. There is more to this concept of Lev Vygotsky that serves as the foundation of scaffolding in education.

To continue the discussion in scaffolding in education, this concept is best simplified and explained as a teaching method that is applied by the teacher to his student where in the teacher provides all the things that the student will need in his studies as well as give the student his very much needed support for the student to be able to discover new concepts and knowledge.  Right now, this method of educating students is applied in various learning institutions.  Scaffolding in education is one of the best methods of teaching that is applied today.

It is great to know that scaffolding in education is being applied in the classrooms where children are being taught.  This style of teaching is a literal transfer of the teacher’s knowledge to the student. However one must understand that the processes of letting the child take charge of his/her learning is a gradual process and not an instant event.  This will require the proper discretion of the teacher anyway; it is a common fact that teaching is a form of skill.  This teaching method must be applied by a teacher that has competent skills and teaching for it to produce the best results.  Scaffolding in education enables the child to learn from the mistakes that he has done which gives the student the confidence that he/she has indeed learned the new concept.
